You did it! You jumped. You’ve started your own business. Gave up a reliable paycheck, full insurance benefits, and the hottie who sat two cubicles down. Clients have popped up and led to other clients and so grows your business.
Great job! But it’s likely you’ll experience one of the most common enemies for entrepreneurs and their access to real success – procrastination.
Escape from the Procrastination Vortex
You know the place — that place where nothing gets done even as deadlines loom closer and insignificant tasks grow urgent in your mind. Why do entrepreneurs procrastinate? They sabotage their careers and success.
Despite numerous research studies, experts don’t have a clear understanding about why people procrastinate. Some studies say procrastinators view their tasks in abstract terms, making it difficult for them to see consequences of delaying the work in concrete terms. Still others claim it has to do with a certain personality type. These theories, along with the many others, lack adequate empirical evidence to back them up.
Procrastination really just boils down to fear.
It may not feel like fear because you don’t experience the symptoms we all associate with primal fear, but it’s fear nonetheless.
I’ve written many pieces about how to overcome the compulsion to go on a procrastination vacation when working on an important project. And, a quick Internet search yields thousands of pages chock full of wisdom on the topic.
If these offered any real solutions for people, hardly anyone would procrastinate anymore (except, of course, those who don’t care yet – like my wonderful kids).
That said, I’m not going to try to give you any tips for overcoming this dream crushing mindset. Instead, I’m going to direct you to a real solution.
Wait But Why?
Yesterday I happened upon a site — quite by accident — that I hadn’t come across before. The site’s main man, Tim Urban, penned a series of three of the most brilliant pieces about procrastination that I’ve ever seen.
Each piece is quite long (and I’m not joking when I say quite long). But he uses an entertaining, conversational tone and includes AH-MAZING visuals to explain his points.
Right about now, you’re thinking, “Yeah, I don’t have time to read even one protracted article about procrastination, let alone three!”
Sure you don’t. This gives you the perfect excuse to put off those tasks and assignments that have become oppressive beasts even more!
Listen, if procrastination rears its ugly head in your life at all, it’s worth it to read these three shared gems from the treasure of Urban’s mind.
Read them in order.
Read them deliberately.
Then come back here and tell me what you think.
